Cartel leader Emily enlists Rita, an underrated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as her true self. Carla Sofia Gascon talks about the two years of preparation that went into this demanding role in Jacques Audiard' s film and about the two extremes of her own personality that she had to play as Emily and Manita. While promoting Emily Perez, Selena Gomez said in several interviews that she is not fluent in Spanish and does not feel happy with her Spanish in this film. Things go well for a while, but the past begins to creep back in. Emilia misses her children and wife, and she doesn’t like the new influence on their lives. Emilia struggles to live half in one life, half in another. This combination of drug thriller, musical, romance, comedy, character-driven social plot, and gender affirmation drama is awesome. The film also covers a variety of interesting locations around the world.
True, the film is diverse
Although the film has many plot twists, director Jacques Audiard keeps the narrative tightly under control. I truly admire and appreciate his work. It’s amazing that a film can be so exciting and funny, and at the same time, one can understand the more than 100,000 people who have disappeared due to drug violence in Mexico, but Audiard does it. The actors received the joint award for their roles at the Cannes Film Festival (Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz and Carla Sofia Gascon). The film is intriguing and exciting because it never loses its human essence.
Pride, truth, forgiveness, love and more – all on full display
Emily’s feelings are natural to what someone in her place might ask and wonder. For example, was she really in love and did people love her? Also, I am fascinated by the French style, especially its rawness. No one pulls any punches, and no censors work with their censorship. No need to waste time scrolling endlessly – here’s everything new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.
